Local inventor on ABC's 'New Inventors'
On August 1, Sun Lizard inventor Colin Gillam will be appearing on
ABC’s “New Inventors” show. During the program, Colin will be able to
explain how the Sun Lizard works to host James O’Loughlin.
A
three-member expert panel evaluated the Sun Lizard against two other
inventions, with the winner advancing to a final “New Inventors” round
later this year where Australia’s best invention of 2007 will be
chosen.
“We were ecstatic to be invited on the ‘New
Inventors,’” Colin said. “Only a small number of Australia’s new
inventions are invited. It’s a real vote of confidence in the quality,
uniqueness and potential of the Sun Lizard.”
The Sun Lizard
exploits the power of the sun to heat homes in winter and cool them in
summer, dramatically reducing fossil fuel energy consumption and
greenhouse gas emissions.
The principle of the Sun Lizard is simple.
To
heat air, the Sun Lizard captures sunlight in a roof-mounted, glass
topped box, causing it to heat up. The Sun Lizard then transfers that
heat to the home using solar-powered fans. In summer, the fans extract
rising hot air from a home, preventing heat buildup.
“With climate
change now on everyone’s minds, products like the Sun Lizard will
become increasingly important,” Colin says. “Programs like the ‘New
Inventors’ really help make the public more aware of what we can all do
to combat climate change.”
