Want to volunteer or gain new experiences?

Morrison House is a not-for-profit community house and is looking to expand its volunteer team.

Volunteers are needed for the general gardening and maintenance team as well as volunteers needed for the Mt Evelyn Community Link. The maintenance and gardening team, which are required for Wednesdays and Fridays, will assist in maintaining many community sites that Morrison House manages in Mt Evelyn, and the Community Link volunteers who are required 1-5pm weekdays will be involved in the day to day running of the Community Link including visitor assistance, general duties and data entry. Volunteers will be provided with the opportunity to enhance existing skills, learn new skills and forge new friendships.

Early Learning and Literacy

As the Mt Evelyn Township Group (METIC) Family Representative, I was recently approached by Cathy Sanders from the Mt Evelyn Primary School. Cathy was interested in developing a network between Primary Schools, Preschools and others who are involved with families to promote and further advance children's early literacy development.

On July 27th we held an initial network proposal meeting, which was attended by the Shire of Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr. Monika Keane, representatives from the Mt Evelyn area Preschools, Primary Schools, the Maternal and Child Health Service, the Mt Evelyn Toy Library, Morrison House Child Care Service, Ranges Community Health and the Yarra Ranges Best Start Program. There was great enthusiasm and lively discussion from all parties who attended to work to continue supporting the future development of children's early learning.

The network is planning to meet once a term, to collaborate and compliment one another's practices in early learning and assisting in the further development of playgroups. This exciting initiative demonstrates the great potential of partnerships strengthening our community.

It has been exciting to assist in the development of such an innovative community approach to supporting families in early learning.
