Our Mission

Friends of Water Race and Quinn Reserve Inc. (FWRQR) incorporated on 11th August 1998 and is located in Mt Evelyn. The group’s main aims are:-

To restore as far as is practicable the alignment of the Water Race as a walking trail, incorporating existing roads, with linkages to the Mt Evelyn Aqueduct Walk, Warburton Trail, Lillydale Lake and Silvan Reservoir.

To enhance the environmental characteristics of the Water Race and Quinn Reserve.

To preserve and publicise the historic aspects of the Water Race. Opened in 1905, the Water Race provided the first water supply for the town of Lilydale. The Water Race formation and artifacts are included in the Shire’s Heritage Overlay. (HO255)).

Achievements

One of our first achievements was working with the students and teachers of Birmingham Primary School to effect indigenous plantings and participate in a project to clean out and plant seedlings in the Puddle Dam. This was made possible by a grant in 1999 of $965 from Least Waste plus technical assistance from the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
A Community Grant from Parks Victoria of $3813 in 2001 contributed to restoration of Quinn Reserve and the water quality of Quinn Creek. A Community Development Grant from Shire of Yarra Ranges of $1300 in 2007 has enabled the publication of a Water Race Trail map & brochure. This is available at the Shire Offices in Lilydale, Mt Evelyn Community Link and over 10 retail outlets in Mt Evelyn. The brochure, printed by M 4 media, gives details of the trail which is a combination of footpaths, unsealed and sealed township roads beside or close to the Water Race alignment.

Projects in progress include:-
Current works programs compiled in cooperation with the Shire and EcoRepair, for the Water Race Trail & Quinn Reserve.
Woody weed removal & revegitation of the Puddle Dam site.
Reopening the Water Race Trail between Borang Avenue and Reserves Road.

Adults $10.00 per annum, Family $15.00 per annum, Child/Concession $5.00 per annum.
